Practicing resurrection: To Pray and to Love in the way of Orthodox Saints
“Every person is, by nature, a temple of God, created to receive into themselves the glory of God” (From Origen’s Commentary on St. Matthew’s Gospel)
At the heart of Orthodox Christian spirituality is the invitation by grace for a person to live out, fully and radiantly, what it means to be made after the image & likeness of God. The glory of God is a human person, fully alive, as St. Irenaeus wrote. This invitation can seem daunting, indeed scary, and yet, as the Orthodox Fathers and Mothers sought to show, it was a wholly realistic prospect. This retreat will provide an opportunity to explore this invitation through the inspiring lives of particular saints and the practical ways they responded to this invitation, slowly allowing themselves to be changed in prayer and in love, in their lives and their communities. It will include space for silent reflection and conversation.
Nicholas Colloff is presently the director of a philanthropic foundation working on poverty in Africa and Latin America. He was introduced to Orthodox spirituality by Metropolitan Antony, the long-running Russian Orthodox archbishop in London, from whom he learned the Jesus Prayer: the Prayer of the Heart. He has led retreats with a wide range of audiences, from Dominican Contemplative nuns in Hollywood, to first-time retreatants, and most recently for the World Community for Christian Meditation. He is also the co-founder of the Prison Phoenix Trust, which teaches meditation and yoga to people in prison.
