Description
An Advent Retreat, incorporating a Quiet Day, with Thomas Merton led by the Revd Dr Gary Hall, Methodist Tutor at the Queen’s Foundation and Merton Scholar.
Friday 7pm will be an introductory session for Merton readers new and old, on reading Merton in critical times.
Saturday will comprise three main sessions with an advent theme, about how Merton can assist our being open to the disruptive coming of God. There will be quiet time on Saturday afternoon, with reflective reading available. On Saturday evening is the option to watch a film together about Merton.
Sunday morning is our final session, on how, in this Advent season, Merton might help us awaken to epiphanies in our midst.
Those who wish can then participate in a Merton-flavoured Eucharist, before our gathering concludes with lunch together.
Each day will be framed by a simple prayer format with reflective reading of scripture and of Merton.
Revd Dr Gary P. Hall is a Methodist minister and theological educator at the Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham. A former editor of The Merton Journal, he has taught and presented on Merton in the UK, Germany, India, US and Canada. Gary is an international adviser to the Board of the International Thomas Merton Society. During downtime, Gary may be found in the woods or by the sea; playing the blues or playing the fool with his grandson. Or at a gig. Or in the garden shed.
